In flight

Use the flight workspace

Keep the map and essential flight information together.

Open the correct flight

Choose the prepared route and review its readiness before starting. Verify the active route and next waypoint, then choose Start tracking when ready. The flight workspace is separate from the ordinary tab-bar map so flight information stays together.

Set up the device, display and position source on the ground. Familiarity with a saved route is not a reason to skip checking which flight is actually open.

Read the labels as well as the numbers

Ground speed, track, bearing, distance, estimated time and GPS altitude depend on the current position source and route. Ground speed is not indicated airspeed; GPS altitude is not a replacement for the aircraft altimeter. A dash means a value is unavailable, not zero.

  • Check the position source and data age.
  • Confirm which waypoint or leg the numbers refer to.
  • Read the units and direction reference shown.
  • Treat estimates as estimates, especially after a speed or route change.

Display and interruptions

Active foreground tracking keeps the display awake. Manually locking the device, leaving the app or system restrictions can still interrupt the view. Check power, heat and mounting before flight; the screen staying awake does not guarantee unlimited battery life.

When the fix is lost

Watch for stale, unavailable or explicitly estimated position information. An estimate is not a new GPS fix. Use your established backup navigation and verify a trustworthy position source before relying on the app again. This is best rehearsed safely on the ground.

Finish deliberately

Stop tracking at the end and review the saved flight log. A recovered flight after an interruption may require Resume tracking; inspect its status rather than assuming it is active. Read what the GPS values mean for a deeper explanation.

Before you fly

FLAL provides supplemental planning and situational awareness. Verify current official information and your equipment setup. Offline data is a saved snapshot, not a live update.
