Separate the journey from the procedure
The FAA IFR enroute chart series provides distinct low-altitude, high-altitude and area chart series with coverage indexes and publication dates. An enroute layer helps present the route environment. Selecting IFR High does not turn a route into a clearance, and selecting IFR Low does not choose an approach at the destination.
Think of your document set as several answers to different questions rather than one “IFR map.” Name the phase and information you need before opening the file.
Know what terminal publications contain
The FAA Terminal Procedures Publication includes instrument approach, departure and standard terminal arrival charts, airport diagrams and relevant textual procedure information. An approach plate is therefore a separate document with its own title, applicability and details to review.
- Enroute review: Which chart series and coverage match the intended routing?
- Terminal review: Which airport and named procedure are you actually preparing to use?
- Surface review: Is the airport diagram immediately available for arrival or departure?
- Contingency review: Which additional procedure or destination documents belong in the preparation set?
Verify the document, not just the folder
Open each needed item. Check the airport identifier, exact document title and effective information; review applicable changes and NOTAMs through your normal briefing process. The FAA explains that terminal publication products have current and next editions and interim change handling. A file being visible in a library is not proof that it applies at the time of flight.
As a practical organization habit, label notes by airport and procedure name rather than writing “approach downloaded.” That makes a later check more specific and reduces the chance of confusing a diagram with an approach document.
Apply this distinction in FLAL
Choose available IFR Low or IFR High in map layers. Open the airport’s Charts area for available diagrams and approach documents, and inspect the offline preparation result for each relevant item. Coverage and document availability vary.
Common misunderstanding: downloading an enroute chart does not automatically establish that every required airport procedure is saved. These reading notes support familiarity; they are not instrument procedure training or approval to conduct a procedure.
